DNA Testing

Our Foster family tested  fits Group 12, Haplogroup 12b1, of the Familytree DNA site.   Exact matchs at 37 marker with 1.  Drury D. Foster of Sevier Ark., b. 1797 Virginia. This means of course our "missing link" must come from "someone in Drury's direct line.  Hence, we are researching all possible Foster Males in his ancestor line, and their offspring.   That is "if" the Drury D. Foster descendants have completed their research correctly, however, it seems they have not posted the results for others to verify. Also, exact match on 37 marker with a #2.  John Foster of Rutherford Co, and Wilson Co, Tn. His son is James Anderson Foster.  An exact match on 37 marker for a  3.  Martin Foster who married Jane.  (I believe Martin connects with Drury D. (#1 above) ancestral  family.
  4.  Within 1 close relative at the 37 marker match with Isaac Foster, who married Elizabeth Simpson, and their son was Fountain Tinsley Foster who came to Illinois.
  5.  William Foster of b. 1770 SC, married Nancy Young. (not sure if this was a 12 or 25 marker) but close relative possibly within 2.  (This may have changed once the 37 marker tests were completed as these test results were much older)
  6.  At the 37 marker Bartlett Foster genetic distance of 2 still a close relative. This line is traceable to immigrating ancestor of James Richard Foster.  I would suspect that he is the MRCA.

From reading what genetic tests will do and not do, the outstanding notation is that DNA TESTING AND STUDIES DO NOT TELL YOU WHO YOUR ANCESTORS ARE. Everything is based on a percentage of relativity of matching a distant relative 8-12 generations back.  So if you have a brick wall and don't know who the ancestors are, you can only go to the "most recent common ancestor" and trace backwards to the last area of your recent ancestor of interest.  Otherwise the tests only confirm you are related to tested matchs.
